Autonomous agents (such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, LangChain, and CrewAI) execute tool calls via the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This translates into JSON-RPC 2.0 requests that carry potentially sensitive arguments-such as customer records, SSNs, or API keys-to internal tool servers. LLM-Shield-Proxy must govern this traffic and determine which agent is allowed to execute specific tools.
LLM-Shield-Proxy handles this traffic at a dedicated gateway: POST /v1/mcp (llm_shield_proxy/api/mcp_router.py). Before forwarding any request upstream, it applies four checks:
- Virtual Key RBAC: A fail-closed check verifying if the caller is authorized to execute the specific tool.
- SSRF / DNS-Rebinding Egress Screening: All HTTP/HTTPS URLs within
tools/callarguments are resolved (checking all A/AAAA records) and validated against a per-virtual-key CIDR/domain policy. See SSRF & DNS-Rebinding Egress Firewall. - AST-Aware PII/Secret Redaction: A recursive traversal of the entire JSON-RPC payload sanitizes arguments outbound and tool results inbound.
- Catalog Policy Filtering: The
tools/listresponse is filtered to only include tools permitted by the policy.

1. Architecture & Data Flow
1.1 Authorized Tool Call (Redact → Forward → Scrub → Return)
Design Note: The return path uses one-way [REDACTED] string replacements rather than rehydration. Tool results often contain new data not present in the original prompt, making bidirectional mapping unreliable.
1.2 Forbidden Tool Call (Fail-Closed Short-Circuit)
The RBAC check executes before sanitization and upstream routing. Denied calls stop immediately without contacting the tool server.

MCP tool governance utilizes the BasePolicyResolver contract. A resolver (e.g., In-Memory, OPA, HashiCorp Vault) returns policy details for a given virtual key, including allowed_tools and blocked_tools.

Empty Allowlist Semantics: The defaultInMemoryPolicyResolverreturns empty lists. WhenMCP_EMPTY_ALLOWLIST_MODE=DENY_ALLis set, an empty allowlist denies all tools. You can setMCP_EMPTY_ALLOWLIST_MODE=BLOCKLIST_ONLYto allow all tools except those explicitly blocked. Because this permissive mode carries risk, it emits a critical startup warning. Always configure a formal allowlist for production environments.
